Obey The Authorities

If we look at the Book of Judges, chapter 21 and verse 25 in the New King James Version, the Bible says: “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” And when that happens, every single time there is a chaos that reigns. Such a sad verse, maybe one of the saddest verses for me in the Old Testament. No man is an island. We need each other desperately.

When a man does his own thing, he becomes a law unto himself and then chaos reigns. It starts in the family and in the home. When dad does his own thing, for example, 'going out with the boys', there is a breakdown in the family. When mom doesn’t submit to her husband, when it comes to order in the family, there is a complete breakdown. When the children are disrespectful towards their parents and don’t listen, there is trouble ahead. Where employees do not submit to their employers, the company is doomed. We need to submit to authority, even as Jesus Himself did. If we go to the Gospel of Matthew 3:15-17, we will see that John the Baptist was not prepared to baptise Jesus but Jesus said: “You must do it.” So Jesus allowed Himself to be baptised by His own creation - That is humility personified. And of course, if we go to Romans 13 we see that the Lord says that every soul is subject to the governing authorities: “For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”

So, if we are told that we have to wear masks, then we need to wear masks. If we are told we cannot go out before 6am and we need to be back at home by 8 or 9 at night, then we need to do it. If we don’t, then there is a chaos that will reign.

So for peace and for order, let’s do it God’s way - God has put an order in place. Husbands love your wives, please! Wives, submit to your husbands. You can’t have two captains on one ship. The ship is bound to hit the rocks. Children respect your parents and honour them. It is the first commandment in the Bible with a promise added to it, Commandment number 5: “Honour your father and mother so that your days may be long in the land…” And then employees, work hard for your employers as if you are working for God. Employers treat your employees with much love and grace and compassion.

God bless you as we pull together in this new year of 2021. Let’s see what The Lord Jesus Christ is going to do because ultimately, He is at the helm of this ship.

Jesus bless you,
Angus and Jill Buchan.
