The Helper

I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Friday morning, the 7th of July, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan with a thought for today.

We start in the Book of Proverbs 18:24:

“But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

“Jesus said, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
John 16:7

An ever-present help in times of need - Who am I talking about? I am talking about our blessed Holy Spirit. The Greek word for “helper” is parakletos. Jesus promised you and me that He would not leave us as orphans. We need to cultivate our relationship with our Lord, Holy Spirit. He is the Third Person of the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I can hear some young person saying, “How do I get to know the Holy Spirit?” By talking to Him daily, by reading the Bible daily, by listening to that small still voice inside you saying, “This is the way, walk in it.” Give Him time to talk with you, be still, and rest in Him. You will find that in Psalm 46:10. He is a gentleman and He will not force His way into your life. Like any relationship in the flesh, you have to build and strengthen that friendship by spending time together. That is exactly how He wants to be with you and talk with you daily.

I will give you an example. I was coming home from a long journey. I stopped at a filling station to put in fuel. After I had paid the man at the filling station, I parked at the restaurant and closed my eyes for a quick sleep. I was very, very tired. As I closed my eyes, there was a knock on the car window. A well-dressed man stood outside, and he said he had a proposition to make. I should have said to him straight away I didn’t want to, but being tired, I thought I would listen to him. He persuaded me to follow him to the ATM, and the garage he said was offering a very special deal. If I put my credit card into the machine I would receive a receipt and I would take that receipt anywhere in the country and when I filled up again, I would get a 50% discount when I filled up. Straight away, the Holy Spirit spoke to me very clearly in my heart. “Do not put your card into that ATM. He is a thief. He wants access to all your money and he will fleece you.” I turned around and I walked away. That is how He works.

Young lady, be careful with that young man and his promises. He might not be the man he says he is. Young man, that business deal, you say it sounds almost too good to be true, maybe it is not true. Listen to the Holy Spirit and He will protect you.

Have a wonderful day,
Jesus bless you and goodbye.
