Who Do You Believe In?

I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 22nd of August, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. 

We start in the Gospel of Mark 8:29:

“He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”

A beautiful scripture! Remember, we always say on this programme, good people don’t go to Heaven, only believers go to Heaven. I get into trouble, I know that - some people say, “You cannot say that.” Well, that is what the Bible says. Like never before we need to start to know what we believe in. Who is Jesus? He is the Son of God. How are we going to get to Heaven? By faith in Him alone.

Last night Jill and I watched an old movie. I am sure you have watched it. If you haven’t you need to get hold of it. It is called, “God is not dead.” The story is very simple, a young student is going to university and he goes into a lecture hall where there is a professor who is not only an atheist but an angry atheist. He puts out a piece of paper for all the students to sign which says, “God is dead.” When this young man gets the paper, he can’t believe it. He says to the professor, “I cannot sign this paper,” and the professor humiliates him in front of the whole class. He then said, “Okay, then explain yourself.” The story goes on, he was really humiliated, his own girlfriend left him, “Why don’t you just sign the form and carry on with your studies?” He said, “I can’t because I believe in Jesus Christ.” It is a wonderful story with a wonderful end. In the end, the 80 students who had all signed that form repented and acknowledged that Jesus was the Lord. 

When I was a young boy, I was taught to learn the Apostles’ Creed by heart. Now folks, I want to say to you, you need to know Who you believe in. There is so much compromise out there, there are so many stories to tell you how to get to Heaven but we need to know the basics. I want to read the Apostles’ Creed to you. This is how it goes:

I believe in God, the Father, Almighty,
The Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, 
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, 
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried. 
He descended into the dead.
On the third day, he rose again,
He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the righthand of the Father
And will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting, amen.
