When the Time is Right
As an old farmer, I can tell you that one of the most dangerous things to do is to try and harvest a crop when it is not ripe; when it is still green, and wet. When we put that crop in the barn it goes mouldy and rots.
The next most dangerous thing to do is to leave the crop standing when it is time to harvest; maybe because the farmer is slack, lazy, and does not have his reaping equipment in order. Once the crop lodges, falls over, like a maize or wheat crop, it is very difficult to pick it up, and then the spring rains arrive and the crop rots in the field.
Timing is of the utmost importance at harvest time, and so it is with preaching the gospel. Paul, the Apostle, said in 1 Corinthians 9:16, “Woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.”
Spurgeon, the great English Preacher, said “What will my Lord say to me if I am unfaithful to You?” He said this speaking to the crowd He was preaching to!
Because it is harvest time, people need to have the opportunity to hear the gospel preached loud and clear. They need to know that they must be ‘born again’ if they are seeking eternal life (John 3:3).
Let’s bring the crop in; it is white unto harvest!
