These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
Acts 17:11
We see that when Paul was in Thessalonica, the people received Paul’s preaching readily and with open arms. They searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether what he was saying was true or not. I believe that in these days in which we are living, we need to carry our Bibles with us when we go to church or any Christian meeting. When we hear something preached we need to check it out with the Word of God.
John Wesley said in his memoirs that when he spoke to the Scots, up in Scotland, they would check everything that he said. He appreciated that they had their Bibles out on their laps and didn’t just take his word without question. Sometimes I feel so sorry for Thomas, the doubter, because he gets hammered every time for having no faith. But, I’ve heard people say that Thomas was a highly intelligent man, he was extremely serious about Jesus, and that is why he said, I will believe it when I see it. He did bow the knee and repent of his lack of faith, but he was also used by God mightily, in fact, he died as a martyr in India.
We need to check whatever people are preaching. It is so important because there are so many things going around that are not scripturally correct.
