A Mustard Seed
““Then He said, “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it?
It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.”
Small beginnings, the results are gradual but remarkable - growth resulting in divine blessing from God. So much that others may benefit from the growth of the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart. The birds of the air can eventually nest in the very branches of the mustard tree, that which has the smallest of all seeds. That is what I love so much about the Lord Jesus Christ! He always seems to choose the smallest and the most insignificant people to do His work.
When the mustard seed was planted into my heart all those years ago, I had such a desire to preach the Gospel. I had very little self-confidence and not very much ability either. I used to preach to the maize plants in the field, from the back of my pick-up and that is the honest truth. But you know the most amazing thing, and why I love God so much, the most amazing unbelievable thing happened - Those very maize plants years later, actually turned into people. Men in fact and men don’t always go to church.
I saw with my own physical eyes, tens of thousands of men standing in the very same place where those maize plants had been planted. I want to encourage you today to step out for Jesus. Don’t be concerned and think, “Well, I don’t have much to offer the Lord.” It is the Lord, in your heart, who grows you into the person He wants you to be!
When I travel I love to give out small little bottles of mustard seed. I give them to the people sitting on the aeroplane or when I am waiting at some meeting. I tell them to put that little bottle of mustard seed in their purse or their pocket. I always remind them it is not a good luck charm but a reminder that, with faith the size of a small mustard seed, you can move those mountains in your life - of despair, fear and hopelessness.
Jesus will do it for you!
Have a wonderful day and God bless you.
