Generous People

A very good morning to you! It is Saturday morning, 4th of June 2022, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.

If we go straight to Acts 2, and I am reading one verse, verse 44:

“Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.”

Don’t tell people that you love them, rather show them that you love them by your actions. You know, it is very hard for a hungry rumbling stomach or a freezing cold person in winter to hear the Gospel preached:

“…and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?”

James 2:16

You see faith is a doing word. Fatih is not just talking, it is action. Now I can hear maybe some of us saying, “But I can hardly feed my own family. I don’t have anything to give anyone.” But it is an amazing thing - God always takes care of a generous person. Do you remember the story of the starving widow and her little boy in the Old Testament in 1 Kings? She only had enough meal and enough oil to make one cake and then they were both going to lie down and die, during a terrible drought. And then the prophet Elijah came and what did he do? He asked for something to eat and she gave him part of their last cake! Miraculously the meal and the oil never ran out and they had food right through the duration of that drought. God takes care of His own.

You know, our little church on the farm, all the members are getting together and are going to make nutritious soup after church on a Sunday morning in a couple of weeks’ time. They are going to make it together for the poor and the needy. They are going to freeze the soup in containers in fridges and then right through the winter they are going to feed the poor and the needy, widows and orphans. The ladies are even knitting balaclavas so that people can keep their heads warm during the winter. We know that you cannot work your way to Heaven. Ephesians 2:8 says we have been saved by grace through faith and that, not even of our own, for it was a gift from God. But Jesus says that when He comes into a man’s heart, it is the love of Christ that compels us to help each other.

Go out today and help a needy person and you will be helping the Lord.
Jesus bless you and goodbye.
