Honour Your Parents
I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 3rd of June, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.
We start off in the Book of Exodus 20:12:
“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”
“Honour your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise, “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
Ephesians 6:2-3
It's the first commandment in the Bible with a promise added to it. This is not optional, this is a commandment from God. A promise was added to that commandment. The Lord says when you honour your mom and dad, you will live long in the land which the Lord has given to you. Honouring your mom and dad is a great privilege, it is a great privilege to have a mom and a dad. You know, folks, I remember like yesterday, my late dad and mom came to live with us on the farm and it was one of the greatest joys for me to go to the local cattle sale and take my dad with me. He would get dressed up in his farm clothes and he would sit in the grandstands while we were doing the bidding and selling the cattle, and just to see him sitting there, and saying, “Well done, Angus. Those were good cattle that we sold today.” It gave me great joy in my heart.
When I was a younger man and played rugby, I was more interested in what my dad thought of the game I played than the selectors. If my dad said, “You played a good game” - aah, it made my day! We need to honour our parents. Now, I can hear some people saying, “But you haven’t met my mom and dad yet. They are not the easiest people to get on with,” and that is probably quite true but it is a commandment from God. Just love them. Do you know why? Because you won’t have them with you forever. I have to wait now until I meet my dad and mom in Heaven before I can have that cup of tea or coffee with them, and I tell you, sometimes I wish - I say, “Lord, I would give a million dollars to be able to sit on the verandah outside our house to have a cup of tea with my mom and dad” - but I will have to wait till we get to Heaven.
So, let's obey our parents. Let's love them, let's cherish them, and God will honour us.
Have a wonderful day,
Jesus bless you and goodbye.
