The Race

A very good morning to you! It is Sunday morning, 1st May, 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.

If we go straight to the Revelation, the last book in the Bible, Jesus says:

“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”
Revelation 3:5

Do you know that seven times, I have counted - seven times, Jesus speaks about overcoming. Now, that does not mean that we have arrived, no. It means we have to keep on running the race which is set before us. If we look at Philippians 3:12, this is what the word of God says. Paul says:

“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.”

But you know the good news is that we are not running this race alone. No, our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, is running this marathon with us, one step at a time, just like the bus driver that you will find on an ultra-marathon. He sets the pace. Now it is not an actual bus. It is a group of people that run with a man that they trust. He puts a little reed in his belt, behind him with a flag on it, and you follow after him. He knows what it will take to finish this ultra-marathon. He is the one who tells you when to stop, to have a drink of water or to have something to eat. He tells you when to walk, when to jog and then he tells you when to stop and have a rest.

If you listen to the bus driver, if you obey him, he will get you over the finish line. I remember, often he would tell us to start singing when he saw that we were getting very tired. He would tell us to start swinging our arms around like a windmill getting the blood going, picking our legs up. He would sing songs, some of them were like nursery rhymes. He would keep the spirits up because he knew - he had been there before. Now, Jesus is our literal bus driver. He says, “If you obey Me, I will get you home. If you obey Me and My statutes, you will be over-comers.” And He will help us to make it right to the end.

Today, try not to do it on your own because we can’t make it on our own. Rather get onto that bus, get into that group of believers and let's run this race together, helping each other until we become complete overcomers. Have a wonderful Sunday as you contemplate on the race that you are running.

Jesus bless you!
Goodbye.
