Stick To The Truth
I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 10th of August, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.
If we go to the First Book of Timothy in the New Testament, Chapter 1:4. This is Paul talking to his spiritual son, Timothy. He says:
“…nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.”
Keep away from old wives’ tales, fantasy stories which cause folks to move away from the truth. Keep away from myths which can cause us to digress and lead to controversies. We need to keep to the Bible, the word of God. God said it, we believe it, and that settles it. Keep it the main thing. It stops confusion. A fable is a story; it is not necessarily true, and a genealogy is a family tree. You know, some people won’t get out of bed on a Friday if it lands on the 13th day of the month! They say it is bad luck. They just stay in bed all day. Can you believe that? My old mother, before I had the privilege of praying the Sinners Prayer with her, if she saw my knives on the dinner table were crossed, she would say, “Angus, un-cross those knives because it brings bad luck.” I want to say to you there is no such thing as luck anyway. What is luck? It is nothing. It is just a word.
We also need to keep away from the old family tree. I don’t know how many arguments I have seen take place when the mother starts talking about her bloodline and the father starts talking about his bloodline, and ”My family came from this place,” and “My family came from that place”, and “My grandfather was this…” No, stop it, stop it!! The Bible says clearly in 2 Corinthians 5:17:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
When you become a Christian, then you also have a new family. You have brothers and sisters from different countries, language groups, colours. It is wonderful. You know, I can meet somebody and love that person in five minutes if they are a genuine follower of Jesus, and I have got other people, sadly to say, they have lived nearby, I have known them for forty years and yet I still don’t really know them.
When we are in Christ, we put away fables and old wives’ tales, and we follow Jesus. We have friends that we know will stay with us until the end because we have the same father, we have got the same destination, we have got the same Saviour that died for us. Oh, it is beautiful!
Go out today and be a friend and tell people about the miracles of Jesus and forget the old wives’ tales.
Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,
Goodbye.
