Life-giving Words

And a very good morning to you! It is Thursday morning, 10th of March, the year 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”

Psalm 33:6

And then we go straight to James, in the New Testament, James 3 and I am reading from verse 5:

“Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.”

The power of the spoken word! We must make sure that our words are sweet because we might have to eat them, as they say! But seriously, world wars have been started by careless words spoken in anger.

A word can be used for good and a word can be used for evil. I have seen too many broken families (it breaks my heart, by the way), divorces, and strong friendships destroyed, by a word spoken in the heat of the moment. You know, a scripture verse that I have remembered, Jill told me many years ago, found in Proverbs, says:

“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.”

Proverbs 10:19

Sometimes we need to let our words be few, but of course, words can also heal, they can forgive, they can build up and they can strengthen.

Words, like when Jesus said to Lazarus after he had been dead in the tomb for four days: “Lazarus, come forth.” And he rose from the dead. Words can also restore relationships and heal - Remember the woman caught in adultery? Jesus said, “He who has no sin cast the first stone.”

Healing takes place through godly words. We need to talk things over, dad and mom, brother and sister. Now, remember, the evil one he does not want this. He fuels the fire, He exaggerates thoughts and he doesn’t want you to resolve them so that they fester and become huge.

Many years ago, Jill and I knew an old couple who have since gone to be with Jesus. They had such a beautiful marriage. They had been married for, I don’t know, well over fifty years... We said to them one day, “What is the secret of your beautiful, successful marriage?” They said, “Every Sunday afternoon, after we have had our lunch, we lay on the bed together and we have a good talk to each other... about everything. About offences that were taken during the week, about not doing things we promised we were going to do - We cleared the air and the most important thing is we encouraged one another and we love one another.”

That is what we need to do today. We need to speak life and not death.

Jesus bless you. Have a wonderful day,
Goodbye.
