Settle Your Debts

And a very good morning to you! It is Thursday morning, 17th March, the year 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan with a thought for today.

If we go to Matthew 6:12, yes, it is part of the Lord’s Prayer:

“And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”

You know, if we can’t afford it then we must not buy it... We have to pay our debts. Maybe you are listening to this and you say, “Buy I owe so much money!” Well, you need to stop buying things you cannot afford and those people you owe money to, the best thing you can do is to not ignore them hoping that it will pass away – it won’t! You need to get in your motor car and go and visit them. Sit down with them and explain that you have fallen on hard times, but you will pay them as soon as you can. Even if you have to pay them a mere pittance every month, start paying them otherwise they will hand you over. We need to take responsibility for our debts.

The system of this world is “Buy today and pay tomorrow” and once they have got you then you are in trouble. It is not God’s principle.

The Lord says we must be no man’s debtor. As soon as you owe something to someone, in a way you become enslaved them - to that company, organisation or person, until you have paid back every single cent. Do you know that debt can ruin a marriage? It can ruin a friendship. It can ruin a life, so just don’t do it. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.

The only one that we need to be indebted to is the Lord Jesus Christ.

You know I remember with great fondness my old dad... My mom went to be with the Lord first and my dad after that. When he was in hospital, every time I visited him, he would ask me, “How is the money?” because he gave me the power of attorney, the signing power. I always said, “Dad, there is plenty there.” He said, “Are you sure?” I said, “Dad, don’t worry. There is lots of money there, you don’t owe anybody anything.” And I could see peace come upon him. Be an honourable person, let the only person you owe a debt to be the Lord Jesus Christ.

Do you remember that old song? It goes something like this:

“He paid a debt, He did not owe
I owed a debt, I could not pay
I needed someone to wash my sins away.
And now I sing a brand new song
Amazing grace!
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.”

So go out today, settle your debts and be free!
Jesus Christ bless you, goodbye.
