Compassion

The Prodigal Son: Luke 15:4-20

What an incredible example of compassion we see in Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son.

We see a Father who loved his son beyond all the evil that his young son had committed. That Dad loved him with an unconditional and passionate love.

Remember his son had disregarded not only his Dad, but the well-being of the entire family. Demanding his inheritance at short notice, he probably forced his Father into huge debt, and he had possibly been compelled to take out a loan, at a high interest rate to payoff the young man. Then, his older brother would have had to double up on the work load to cover for his brother’s absence.

The neighbours would have been gossiping and shame would have come upon the entire family because of this rebellious son’s attitude!

Yet after all of that, when the young man had seen his foolishness and the mistakes he had made, he decided to come home, he repented and his loving Dad looked past all of his son’s foolish actions. He shouted out to all his staff and family: “For this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” And they began to be merry. (Luke 15:24)

That’s exactly how Jesus feels about you and me - so we too need to go back home, say sorry and our compassionate Father will waiting with open arms to forgive and to love us unconditionally
