Kind & Caring

And a very good morning to you!

It is Wednesday morning, 15th December, the year 2021 and this is your friend Angus Buchan with a thought for today.

“So they went and came to the house of a harlot (a prostitute) named Rahab and lodged there.”

Joshua 2:1

And verse 4 says:

“Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.”

A harlot hid the men of God! Then Luke 10:33, this is a story that Jesus told:

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.  So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.”

Now in those days, a Samaritan was frowned upon by the Jewish people. He definitely wasn’t one of the 'in-crowd'. And Rahab was a prostitute but they took care of those who were hurting, those who were in distress.

You and I, as followers of Jesus, have got to start being a little more kind, a little bit more sensitive and a little bit more caring.

You know, I remember going to Australia as a young man. I was a young cowboy, just over 20 years old and I used to go to the pub in the evening. Not to drink beer but to have some fellowship and some friendship because I was very lonely and far away from home. We really need to open our hearts towards people in the world, if we want them to come to Jesus.

There is a story that I heard that I will never forget, that a pastor told many years ago. He said that when he was a young student, studying theology in Edinburgh, Scotland with his newly married wife, one cold, frosty morning they were walking down a street in Edinburgh and they came upon this little house. It had a beautiful window-box with lots of flowers, the door was open and in they walked, to a B&B. They saw an old lady come out with an apron, a loving old lady and she said: “Good morning, can I help you?” “Yes, we would like some scones and some hot tea.” She said, “No problem, please sit down.” And off she went into the kitchen. They got a little bit irritated because she took a long time but eventually, she came out with piping hot scones, beautiful fresh strawberry jam and whipped cream.

The two young students got stuck in and ate as much as they could. When they finished they said, “That was absolutely delicious!” The old lady with her red cheeks and a big smile on her face said, “I am so pleased - Have you had enough?” “Yes, thank you, how much do we owe you?”
She looked at them surprised and she said, “No, you don’t owe me anything!” And they said, “Isn’t this a restaurant, a B&B?” She said, “No, this is a private home.” She just loved them. He said he had never forgotten that hospitality. We need to do the same.

We need to go out and we need to love people this Christmas time.
God bless you and have a wonderful day.
