The Early Bird

A very good morning to you! It is Thursday morning, 17th of February and the year is 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.

“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

Revelation 16:15

The early bird always catches the worm... You know, my wife always says to me, “It is just as easy to be early as it is to be late.” It's an absolute fact. It is a good habit to be early. We really do need to get up in the morning. It's the early bird that catches the worm - such a true saying, isn’t it?

Jesus was never late for an appointment, He was never early for an appointment, but He was always spot on time! You see, if you are late starting off, you just don’t seem able to catch up, do you? You are just late all day long. Often the disciples were looking for Jesus early in the morning because the crowds had already gathered. And where was He - He was up the mountain. He was fellowshipping with His Father, He was getting instructions from His Father for what He had to do that day.

A prime example is an illustration that Jesus gave about with the ten virgins, remember? Five early risers and five late risers, five wise virgins and five foolish virgins.

“And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’

Matthew 25:8

We cannot afford to sleep in, we cannot afford to miss the boat. As a farmer, I used to do most of my work before breakfast in the morning. That's right. We would have a late breakfast every morning, Jill and I, at 9 o’clock. We were up way before the sun came up and we had most of our work already running smoothly. The tractors were working in the field, the cows had been milked, everything had been done before breakfast. Then you can enjoy a nice breakfast and fellowship with your wife.

What about your quiet time - when do you get up for your quiet time? “Oh well, I don’t have time at the moment.” - You can’t afford not to have time. When I was a young man in Scotland I used to walk down the little village roads and a farmer would hang over the fence with a piece of straw out of his mouth. He would always have time to speak... But do you know why? Because he was an early riser. He had done most of his work early in the morning. Always have time to speak to Jesus. He is never too busy to speak with you.

You know, that brings a to my eye. He has got more on His mind than anyone else in the universe but He has always got time to speak to us.

Get your instructions from the Lord, early, first thing in the morning and you will be pleasantly surprised how much work you can get done in a day.

And then lastly, go to bed earlier in the evening.

Jesus bless you.
Have a wonderful day.
