The Helper

And a very good morning to you! It is Wednesday morning, 6th April, the year 2022. And this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

John 14:26

That is right, the Helper, the Holy Spirit. The Greek word is Parakletos - He will be our Protector, our Confidante, Advisor and most of all, He will be our Friend! Jesus did not leave us alone? No - The Holy Spirit is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother. You will find that in Proverbs 18:24. We never need to be lonely, He is always with us. Jesus promised us, before He went to Heaven, not to leave us as orphans, helpless. You will see that in verse 18. That is why He sent His Holy Spirit to guide us, love us and protect us.

When I was a little boy, I think 8 years old and my brother was 6 years old and my baby sister hadn’t been born yet, my dad would take us to watch a rugby match on the weekend. When we walked into that rugby stadium with all the people jostling around, it was amazing how, when my brother and I walked in the front, people just seemed to move aside for us. We were so amazed, we thought we must be very important... It was only many years later that we realised that they were not moving aside for us - They were moving aside because there was a big, strong Scottish blacksmith walking right behind us! I tell you what folks, we have the Holy Spirit who is walking behind us today, and in us and around us, and we have nothing whatsoever to fear!
